Kenneth the son of Halvor Haakenson Jr. and Margaret Haakenson, dear brother of Michael, Mary Jo, Peggy, and Jean Haakenson all of Racine Wisconsin enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 19 1967 in Milwaukee WI. He arrived in Vietnam on February 17 1968 where he was assigned to and served with Company E, 2d Battalion, 27th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the month the Battalion was conducting assigned combat operations in Quang Nam Province and on March 12, Company E was placed under the operational control of the 1st Battalion, 7th Marines. While moving on their assigned patrol route south of the Song Thu Loan (River), and west of Ninh An (1) hamlet in Hieu Duc District the Marines made contact with the enemy. During a brief fire fight PFC Kenneth Haakenson was killed by hostile rifle fire and two Marines were wounded.
