Derl Grey Stallard MAGGIE ALLEY — Derl Grey Stallard, 73, passed away Friday, March 25, 2005, at his home in Mars Hill after a long struggle with cancer. He was cremated at his request and will be interred in his hometown of Coeburn, Va. He is preceded in death by his parents, David Gordan and Ola Reed Stallard; brothers Artice, Hershell and Verby; sisters, Beatrice and Ellelia. Dr. Stallard was born May 14, 1931. He was a 1949 graduate of Coeburn High School and a 1953 graduate of Berea College in Kentucky. He attended the University of Louisville where he graduated in 1957 as president of his senior class with a doctor of medical dentistry degree. He was also a member of the North Carolina Dental Association. He was an active member of the Waynesville Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses and enhoyed spending time in the ministry of his faith. Upon graduation, h e began working for the Florida State Board of Health until he entered private practice in Jacksonville, Fla. He and his family then moved to Maggie Valley in 1974 where he continued to practice dentistry and took great pleasure in treating patients who for reasons of economics, health or other factors, could not obtain care elsewhere. Always available for emergencies at any time, his practice included patients who traveled near and far for their dental care. Survivors include one daughter, Renee Gregory and her husband Bobby of Nags Head; one son, Roger Stallard and his wife Melissa of Raleigh; grandsons Jason and Jeremy Gregory and Evan Stallard; granddaughters Megan and Shannon Gregory and Carolina Stallard; one brother Leonard Stallard, Gilbert, Ariz., two sisters, Bureda Freeman, Abingdon, Va., and Loretta Boyes, Asheville, and many cherished nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Waynesville. Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Madison County, P.O. Box 69, Marshall, NC 28753, which provided loving care during his final days.
