Funeral services were held at the Roderick Funeral Home Sunday afternoon for John William Alumbaugh, son of John and Altha Jane Alumbaugh, who was born in the state of Missouri, January 14, 1866, and passed away at Seneca, Kansas, Feb. 17, 1945, at the age of 79 years. He came with his parents when 12 years of age to Doniphan County, where they settled in 1878. He came to live at Wetmore in 1903 and was in the shoe repairing business about 42 years until his age and health caused him to give up his work. He suffered a severe heart attack a few weeks ago and later almost pneumonia. He has lived alone at his home northeast of town 1/4 mile, since the death of his wife and step daughter, Edna Manderville, and he was taken to the Convalescent home at Seneca where he could have care, last Thursday morning, but he passed away early Saturday morning. Rev. W. E. Burdette officiated at the funeral service. Miss Helen Mayer and Eldred Lowry sang "Whispering Hope," a duet, and Eldred sang as a solo, "Sunshine Tomorrow." Mrs. F. P. Hanson accompanied. The pallbearers were nephews. He is survived by two brothers, Frank W. Alumbaugh, Osage City, and Peter L. Alumbaugh, Sharon Springs, several nieces and nephews. One brother, Thomas and two sisters, Cynthia and Darla preceded him in death. John's good natured personality won him many friends as was in evidence by the many beautiful flowers which were contributed by the businessmen, neighbors and friends. His brothers, Peter L. and Frank W. of Osage City and several of his family, neighbors and friends were here to pay respect to a worthy man who was handicapped all his life as a mute, working and making an honest living. He will be missed on our streets where he has been in business over 40 years.
