Former state Rep. Ron Cyrus, who represented Greenup County for 20 years, died Tuesday in a Lexington hospital.

Mr Cyrus, father of country music singer and actor Billy Ray Cyrus, began his career in the General Assembly in 1976. Mr Cyrus was a Democrat from Flatwoods.

He had suffered from Lung Cancer, his close friend, state Rep. Rocky Adkins, D-Sandy Hook, said yesterday.

The House observed a moment of silence in honor of Mr Cyrus yesterday.

"He was a fine, fine gentleman and he was a great legislator who cared about people," state Rep. Rocky Adkins said on the House floor yesterday. "We lost a dear, dear friend."

Adkins, the Democratic floor leader form Sandy Hook, said Mr Cyrus took him under his wing when Adkins first went to the legislature in 1987.

Mr Cyrus was executive secretary-treasurer for the Kentucky AFL-CIO from 1984-1998. Mr Cyrus also served with Alan Greenspan on the Federal Reserve Board.

His son Billy Ray is most known for the song Achy, Breaky Heart in 1992. His song We The People became George W Bush's official campaign theme song in 2000. Mr Cyrus served as chairman of the board for the Billy Ray Cyrus Foundation charity.

He was also an Air Force Veteran and served in japan.

He is survived by his wife, Joanie; two sons; Billy Ray and Kevin; three daughters; Cheri, Lisa and Angela; 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Ron was a wonderful person, very kind hearted and friendly to everyone he met.
