Venerated genealogist, author and grandmother

Susan Antoinette Watters Lovett, died early Friday, June 24, 2005 at Kennestone Wellstar Hospital following a very brief illness.

She was born June 14, 1922 in Shannon (Rome), Floyd County, GA to the late Alva Gordon Watters and Mabel Florence (Billingsley) Watters. Susan was a descendant of pioneer settlers of Floyd County. She was raised in Detroit, Michigan where her father was employed by Ford Motor Company. At the age of 13, she visited her widowed Aunt Jessie (Billingsley) Fain in Rome, GA and remained there marrying Truman Honor Lovett on March 23, 1940 in Centre, AL.

She attended Neinas Intermediate School and Western High School both in Detroit, MI. After coming south, she attended the Girl's High School in Rome, Ga. She received a diploma from Massey Business School and the extension school of Mercer University in Bible Study. She also received certificates of Bible Study from Moody Bible Institute. Susan was a member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church, Marietta, GA.

Susan worked as a keypunch operator, typist, military personnel clerk, secretary, and medical transcriber in various government facilities including Dobbins Air Force Base, Veterans Hospital, and the IRS.

Some of her many talents included quilting, crocheting and knitting for all her children and grandchildren, as well as having a knack for writing poetry. Her favorite hobby was researching our family genealogy which she had been involved in since the early 1950's. She was a member of the National Genealogical Society and the New Jersey Historical Society….publishing a book in 1993 entitled "Joseph Watters, Pioneer Settler of Floyd County, Georgia – His Roots, Branches and Related Families".

Survivors include her beloved sister, Sara Elizabeth Bening of Detroit, MI; sons, William Truman Lovett, Marietta, GA; Thomas Moses Lovett, Ellijay, GA; daughters, Toby Jane Davis, Little Mountain, SC; Nancie Lovett Whitfield Dubard, Marietta, GA; Rebecca Elizabeth Gronenthal, Marietta, GA; 1 nephew; 16 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren,.

A private family service was held Sunday, June 26, 2005 at Medford-Peden Funeral Home in Marietta, GA…the body was cremated.
