"Former County Sheriff Slim Awkerman Dies"

Former Huntingdon County Sheriff, R. Ralph (Slim) Awkerman, 74, of 311 Washington St., Huntingdon, died at 8:40 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 1975, at the J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient since this past Friday. He had been in failing health for the past six months.

A native of Six Mile Run, he was born September 7, 1901, to B.C. and Jenny (Gracey) Awkerman.

On April 18, 1947, he married the former Violet Speck in Mount Union.

Surviving, in addition to his widow, are a sister, Mrs. Clifford (Nellie) Alloway, Philadelphia; and four half-sisters, Mrs. Grant (Beatrice) Rosenberry, Mount Union; Mrs. Grant (Grace) Donaldson and Mrs. Russell (Esther) Rittenhouse, both of Hamburg, NY; and Mrs. Henry (Cleo) Kidwell, of Frederick, MD. Seven brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

The deceased was of the Protestant faith.

He served two terms as county sheriff, beginning in January of 1958 and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Pennsylvania Sheriffs Association.

Prior to running for office, he worked for five years as a mechanic at the former Detwiler Motors, Huntingdon, and he was a bus driver in Huntingdon for 22 years.

He was a member of the Huntingdon Moose Lodge No. 223, the No. 2 Volunteer Fire Company, Standing Stone Post No. 1754 V.F.W., and Frank P. Hommony Post No. 24 American Legion.

Mr. Awkerman had always been interested in sports, hunting, and fishing.

He was a resident of Huntingdon for most of his life, but lived previously in Mount Union and Orbisonia.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family on Thursday, December 4, at Brown's Funeral Home, Huntingdon.

The Rev. Clyde E. Way will officiate and burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Huntingdon.

It was the request of the deceased that there be no viewing nor visitation and that flowers be omitted.

Persons wishing to make memorial contributions should send their gifts to the Huntingdon Chapter of the American Cancer Society.
