Art was born on May 23, 1932 In Plainfield, New Jersey and died on Monday, August 25, 2014 at his home in Bossier City, Louisiana.

He served in the United States Air Force for 21 years from 1952 to 1973 retiring as a Master Sergeant. Highlights of Art's military career included receiving the Presidential Medallion from President Lyndon B. Johnson for his part in providing communications from Air Force One to the President's staff on the ground during the Seven Nations Conference in the Philippines and serving at the Pentagon in White House communications. He served during both the Korean and Vietnam conflicts.

After his military retirement he worked for Tri-State Oil Tool and later owned his own business, Green Acres Pack and Ship, both in Bossier City. He was also a partner in the rental property firm Mathews Properties. Art was a dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus where he served as Grand Knight and worked tirelessly for years as a volunteer in many different roles.

An avid golfer, he was thrilled to have made three holes-in-one in his lifetime, two of which were only six weeks apart. He shared his affinity for golf with his sons who all shared the game with him over the years including a few rounds where all six Mathews men played together.

Art was a dedicated and loving husband and father who will be dearly missed by his devoted wife Henrietta (Retta) and his five sons, each of whom consider their father their hero.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years Henrietta Mathews of Bossier City, Louisiana, and sons Walter Joseph Mathews and wife Patricia, of Clinton, Mississippi, William Jerry Mathews and wife Sherry, of Bossier City, Arthur John Mathews, of Bossier City, Jeffrey Cliff Mathews and wife Kristine Coreil of Natchitoches, Louisiana, Jason Charles Mathews and wife Lisa of Benton, Louisiana, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be his sons and grandsons. Honorary Pallbearers will be his golf buddies from the Barksdale Air Force Base Golf Course and the Knights of Columbus Bossier Council 4873.

The family would like to extend special thanks to in-home caregiver Theresa Lambert and Hospice Nurse Robyn Watkins for their dedicated service and professionalism.

Condolences may be left for the family and the guestbook may be signed at www.hillcrestmemorialfh.com
