BEDFORD, Mass. - Katharine Lobdell Wilson, 85, of Bedford and formerly of Huntington, Conn., and New York City, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1992.
She was the daughter of Ross Platt and Mabel (Ebbets) Lobdell. She was the great great great granddaughter of Zephaniah Platt, founder of Plattsburgh.
She received a bachelor of arts degree from Wellesley College, did advanced study in psychology at the New School of Social Research and post graduate study at Columbia School of Social Work. She married William Kellogg Wilson Sept. 21, 1946. He died in 1981.
She was the director of young adult programs from the YWCA in Newark, N.J., from 1929 - 1943. In 1943, she joined the Waves, and after completing officer's training she was subsequently transferred to the Wave barracks in New York City where she served as commanding officer.
During World War II, she was the only female commanding officer in the United States and went on to complete 20 years in the Naval Reserves. She was recalled by the Waves in 1948 and acted as assistant district director and housing director for the 3rd District. She joined the national board of the YWCA in 1950 to assist with the personnel program. As director of intake, she processed applications of all people seeking professional posts in the YWCA.
Survivors include three stepdaughters, Janet Connors of East Durham, Nancy Dennison of Houston, Texas and Susten Nevelson of Florence, Italy; one stepson, Joseph G. Wilson of Old Orchard Beach and Damariscotta, Maine; 12 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren
In 1988, when New York observed the 200th celebration of the ratification of the U.S. Constitution, she attended as an honored guest. As the only living direct descendant of any of the signers, her participation in the significance of the ratification.
