Hester E. Lash was born June 1, 1839, in Hancock county, Ohio, and lived to reach the age of 76 years, 9 months and 1 day. She grew to young womanhood in the county of her birth, and in 1856 the family left their Ohio home and crossed the plains, coming to Nebraska where they settled two miles west of Peru. She was married May 23, 1858, to Francis Redfern. They continued to live on a farm until a few years ago when they moved to Auburn to make their home.
Mrs. Redfern was a very fine type of Christian woman, uniting with the Methodist church when she was eleven years old and remaining firm in the faith until the end. Her life was one of Christian consecration and she carried the teachings of the faith she had professed into her every day life and these things made her a true and faithful wife and mother, a generous friend, and a kind and helpful neighbor.
She is survived by her husband and seven sons, J. F. Redfern of Alma, Mont., Charles F. Redfern and J. W. Redfern, both of Spokane, Wash., W. E. Redfern and C. W. Redfern of Auburn, A. S. Redfern of Fullerton, Calif., and Dr. L. Redfern of Lincoln.
The funeral was held from the Auburn M. E. church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon and at that time a large number of friends gathered to pay their respects to the memory of this good woman and by their presence to testify to their sympathy for the family. The services were conducted by Rev. W. A. Albright of Fairmont, a former pastor, assisted by Rev. E. J. T. Connelly of this city. At the conclusion of the services the remains were laid to rest in the Sheridan cemetery." Nemaha County Herald (Auburn, Nebraska), March 10, 1916
