Anna Jacobs King, 89, passed away on Monday, August 25, 2014. She was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma on April 2, 1925. Her parents were Nancy Tea Jacobs and John A. Jacobs. She grew up near Little River, eight miles south of Holdenville and at age 13 attended and later graduated from Chilocco Indian Agricultural Boarding School.
Anna went on to graduate from Hillcrest Memorial Hospital Nursing School in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1946. In 1949, she joined the United States Army Nurse Corp as a 2nd Lieutenant and served as a nurse during the Korean War. It was at this time she married Captain James F. King, III.
As a military couple they lived in diverse places such as Taiwan, Saipan, Hawaii, and Japan. Following her husband’s death in 1969, she also lived in Guam and Panama. She was a world traveler, and visited many places in Europe, Central and South America, and the Pacific Islands.
Anna was an avid golfer and at one time, won the silver medal in the South Pacific Games – their version of the Olympics.
In 1992, she retired from nursing and moved from Panama back to the states, eventually coming back to her tribal community and residing in the Muscogee (Creek) Elder Housing in Okmulgee, Oklahoma.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters: Irene Cleghorn, Becky Lena, Ella Jacobs, and brother, Jack Jacobs. Surviving family members are her 4 children, James F. King, IV, Jeff King, Nancy King, and Tara King; 11 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren.
