Some records give the state of his birth as New York. He was the son of John Whitney and Louise Amden. He married Pheba Ann Mayhew about 1841. His second wife was Sarah Bratt, born about 1834, daughter of David Graham and Catharine Mcgrevy. Pliny and Sarah were married in Fayette County, Iowa on 10 February 1882 by W. A. Whitney, JP
