Joe was raised in Wilson County where he married Lois Earlene Prichard January 7, 1934. Lois was the daughter of James Fenn Prichard and Alta Mason Wright. Joe was a carpenter, like his father.
During World War II, Joe enlisted in the Army in March 1943 as a private. He was sent to Europe and promoted to a Tech 5th Grade with the Medics. Joe was captured by the Germans Dec 21, 1944, and held in a POW Camp until July 1945.
Joe honored his family's history of military service like his great-grandfather Sgt. Lewis Whitfield Westbrook, killed in the Battle of Gettysburg; and his Ancestral Soldiers of the Revolution: Moses Westbrook, Sr., NC Militia; William Eddins, Sr., VA Militia and NC Line; James Menees, VA Militia; and Dennis Kelly, MD Line.
