Charles Shorten, aged 11 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Shorten, 408 Duncan street, died at 6 o'clock yesterday morning in the State hospital from injuries received at the Moffat mine, Minooka, late Sunday afternoon when the mine car in which he was riding collided with another car at the bottom of an incline.
Shorten and a companion, Vilo Lazzari, were playing near the mine and ventured a ride in one of the cars standing on the track. The car got beyond their control near the bottom of the incline and crashed into another standing on a siding. Both boys were thrown from the car, Shorten landing on his head. He was rushed to the State hospital where it was found that he was suffering from concussion of the brain. Lazzari received lacerations of the face.
Shorten is survived by his parents and three brothers, Russell, Bertram and Paul Jr. He is the nephew of Charles Shorten, well known baseball player. The funeral will take place at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon with services at the home. Burial will be in Forest Hill cemetery.
