Michael Lee Neel, 59, of Fairmont passed away Monday, August 25, 2014 at Fairmont General Hospital following an extended illness.
He was born in Fairmont on February 23, 1955, a son of the late George T. Neel and Barbara (Vangilder) McGown of Georgia.
Michael was an exceptional auto body mechanic and painter by trade. Throughout his years, he had several career paths including, carpentry, roofing, mechanics and painting. He attended the Samaria Free Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening, picking berries and spending time with his loving family.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his loving children, Crystal VanGilder and her husband Ricky of Fairmont, Kim Carpenter and her husband Chuck of Fairmont, Barbara Dunn and her companion Steve Harsh of Morgantown, Michael Neel and his wife Mindy of Fairmont, Michelle Williams and her husband Billy of Fairmont, Jeanna Madrid and her husband Rene of Texas and Travis Neel of Texas, 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are six brothers, Tom Shorter and his wife Linda of Dola, Jeff Neel and his wife Maria of New Mexico, George Neel and his wife Cheryl of Fairmont, Christopher Neel of Fairmont, Brian Neel and his wife Lillian of Georgia and Robert Greiner of Georgia, four sisters, Kimberly Lanko Neel and her companion Mark Rankin of Pennsylvania, Lisa Krkosska and her husband Kevin of Texas, Mindy Wilson and her husband Jeremiah of South Carolina and Misty James and her husband Richard of Georgia, as well as several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother in infancy, Timothy Neel, a sister-in-law, Elsie Shorter and a son-in-law, Jimmy VanGilder.
Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St. Fairmont on Tuesday from 1-8 pm and Wednesday from 11 am – 1 pm. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at 1 pm with Evangelist Steve Stemple officiating. Interment will follow at Upper Linn/Hickman Cemetery in the Glady Creek area of Marion County.
