Folk Figure. Wheeler was a Hospital Apprentice 2nd Class on the U.S.S. Cyclops (a collier). The ship disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle on March 4, 1918. The ship carrying 306 people including enlisted men and passengers was never heard from again. It is one of the Bermuda Triangles great mysteries. Although the ship disappeared on March 4, 1918, the designated date of death for every one on board is June 14, 1918.
Hospital Apprentice 2c James Madison Wheeler enlisted in Nashville, Tennessee on 24 July 1917. He shipped aboard the USS Cyclops Collier No.4. The ship departed Barbados 4 March 1918 and disappeared into the Western Atlantic. It was declared lost on 14 June 1918. The disappearence is one of the great mysteries of the sea and to the area known as the Burmuda Triangle. Two of the Cyclop's sister ships during World War I were lost in this area, as well, but during World War II.
