He was born October 18, 1927 at Pittsburg, KS, the son of William M. and Mary E. (Parker) Lock.
He graduated from Pittsburg High School, in the Class of 1945.
He grew up in Pittsburg and lived in Frontenac for 53 years before moving to Columbus in 2008.
He enlisted in the Marine Corp and served two years.
On August 7, 1953, he was united in marriage to Joy V. Gregory at the First Christian Church in Baxter Springs, KS. She preceded him in death on February 1, 2008.
Mr. Lock was a chemical analyst for Spencer Chemical Company/Gulf Oil.
He taught at Bronaugh High School and then was in charge of the Grounds Crew at Pittsburg State University.
Since retirement, he had enjoyed gardening with his son and was well known at the Farmers Market in Columbus, KS.
He was a former member of the Countryside Christian Church and had currently attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Columbus.
He was a member of the Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post #64 and the VFW Post # 1372 of Columbus.
He is survived by his son, John Lock, Jr. and wife, Rhonda of Columbus, KS; his daughter, Mary Catherine McDonald and husband, Larry of rural Quapaw, OK; Five grandchildren, Brian Pyle, Brandon Pyle, Shane Lock, Katy McDonald Stovall, and Ashley Lock; 4 great grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren; 8 step great grandchildren; his son-in-law, Mickey Pyle of Girard; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kristi Joy Pyle, two brothers, George and Donald Lock; and two sisters, Mary Louise Ricci and Mildred McWilliams.
