William was the son of Richard Gazaway and Emma Howard. William was born in Dawson County, Georgia and lived there until 1910 census which found the family in Gordon County, Georgia, some time after this census the family moved to Etowah County, Alabama where they lived out their lives.

William married first Clara William and had one child Roy Gazaway.

William married Lillie Curl about 1927 and had several children with her; William, Gerald, and Martha.
