William, known as Roy, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland in the Class of 1935. He had a long military career and retired as a U.S. Navy Captain.

Roy was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry and intrepidy in action as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. Ludlow during the amphibious invasion of Southern France in August and September 1944. He was also awarded the Legion of Merit for clearing the Mediterranean coast route of hostile U-Boats during World War II.

Roy married Beatrice Cox in 1937. They were survived by a daughter and two grandsons.
