On February 1, the Battalion was located at Phu Loc in Thua Tien Province when in the early morning hours the enemy struck the Battalion CP, Combined Action Platoons Hotel 5 and Hotel 6 as well as the Phu Loc District Headquarters. Heavy mortar barrages were followed by ground attacks, with CAP H5 in danger of being overrun by the enemy a reaction force made up of H&S Company Marines were sent to reinforce the CAP unit. Facing heavy enemy fire the Marines were unable to advance and were taking heavy casualties, a platoon from Company B was dispatched and finally the men were able to break through the enemy and advance to reinforce the CAP unit. During the multiple engagements with the NVA and VC forces eighteen men were killed in the fire fights, Cpl Curtis Snitker was one of the casualties; he was killed by hostile rifle fire.
