Mahala and Elias had ten children who grew into adulthood, seven sons and three daughters. The youngest daughter was born a year before Elias died in 1856. Two of the older sons died in the Civil War. Mahala managed to hold on to at least some of the land after the war and left it to her three youngest sons. She is buried next to her husband, in a small family cemetery in the middle of a tobacco field.
