George Schroeder
AGE: 88 • Bay Head
George Schroeder, of Bay Head, died at his home in Bay Head on Friday night, May 2, 2014, one day after his 88th birthday.
George was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA and was a Navy veteran of World War 2 and Korea. His time in the US Navy provided the foundation of discipline and work ethic that he imparted to his children. He served as an electrician aboard the USS Quincy, a heavy destroyer that participated in the invasion of Normandy, carried President Roosevelt to the Yalta conference, and aided in the demilitarization of Japan after its surrender in 1945. During the Korean War, George served aboard an LST.
After his military service, George received a degree from the Eckoll's College of Mortuary Science in Philadelphia and worked for William J. Battersby and Son. George married Elizabeth Roth, a registered nurse, and they moved to the Jersey shore in the 1950's. George became the owner of the Beach-Boro Motor Company, an Esso dealership at the corner of Bay Avenue and Rt. 88 in Point Pleasant. George provided the growing shore communities with car repair and excellent customer service for over 30 years. In the 1960's and 70's he was known as everybody's favorite gas station man.
George is survived by Betty, his wife of 60 years, and by his four children and four grand children. George's ashes will be interred at a military veteran's cemetery in Ocean County.
