Herbert E. Babcock died December 26, 1996 after a lingering illness.

Born July 6, 1914 in Elrod, South Dakota, the eldest of six sons to Victor E. and Mary Stoddard Babcock.

Married Margie E. Shannon on October 24, 1940 in Watertown, South Dakota.

Graduated Valedictorian of his senior class from Butler High School, Butler, South Dakota.

He was honored with a basketball scholarship to attend Northern University, Aberdeen, South Dakota. He excelled in athletics during his four years of attendance at Northern University.

He received his bachelor's degree and continued his graduate work at the University of Utah and Brigham Young University. In 1973, he was inducted as a charter member of Northern University's Athletic Hall of Fame.

Herb played professional baseball in Sioux City, Iowa. He also played and managed in Utah's Industrial League for many years.

Herb's musical abilities were exceptional. He had a lovely tenor voice, was an excellent dancer, and had been trained on several musical instruments.

Herb retired from Kennecott Copper Co. after thirty-seven years of service in the purchasing dept.

A longtime member of Willow Creek Country Club, he was an avid golfer and bowler.

He was an active member of many civic organizations and St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

His survivors are his wife; son, Ronald, of Salt Lake City; daughter, Jacqulyn Sweitzer, of Portland, Oregon; five grandchildren, Christopher, Wendi, Erin, Kelly, and Holly Anne; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents and five brothers.

The family wishes to thank the many friends that never forgot Herb during his illness. We wish to offer a special thanks to Dr. Robert Bond for his years of care, also to the wonderful staff on the third floor of Quinney Care at St. Joseph Villa.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 11:00 a.m. in St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1375 East Spring Lane (5000 South). Friends may call on Sunday from 6:00-7:00 p.m., with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m., at Neil O'Donnell & Sons Mortuary, 372 East 100 South.
Committal: Mount Calvary Mausoleum, 4th Avenue and T Street.
