Martha Ellen Loyd 52, of Oakmont, PA, and formerly of Huntington, WV., died on Sat, Feb 13, 1999, at UPMC St. Margaret's Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA of ovarian cancer.

Born on Aug 28, 1946, in Exchange, WV, she was the daughter of the late B Frank Loyd and Ruth Rohrbough Loyd.

She graduated from Sutton HS and received her BS from Fairmont State College and her Master's of Divinity from Duke University. Prior to her illness, Loyd was employed as director of administration at Volz Environmental Services, Inc. in Pittsburgh.

Ordained in the United Methodist Church, Loyd served in numerous leadership positions on the national, district and local church levels earlier in her career. Nationally, in 1976, she was one of the first 10 women clergy in history to be elected as a delegate to the General Conference, and she served on the Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry from 1969-72. Loyd's elected positions in the West Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church include four years (1976-80) as chairperson of the Conference Council on Ministries, eight years (1972-80) on the Conference Board of Ordained Ministry, and four years (1972-76) as chairperson of the Conference Commission on the Status and Role of Women. Loyd served on numerous district church commissions and boards, including the Board of Directors of the Wesley Foundation at West Virginia University and Fairmont State College, the District Committee on Ordained Ministry and the District Council on Ministries in the two districts.

As a pastor, Loyd was the campus minister at Marshall University in Huntington from 1979-85. At Marshall, she was elected president of the Faculty Women's Association from 1984-85, and served as president of the Huntington Ministerial Association from 1983-84.

She is survived by five siblings: Nell Griffin of Charleston, WV, Rachel Kelsey of Collierville, TN, Jean Johnson of Trafford, PA, Jake Loyd of Sutton, and John Loyd of Philippi, WV as well as by 13 nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Stockert-Gibson Funeral Home, Flatwoods, WV with the Revs. Reba Thurmond and Heather Murray Elkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Fisher Family Cemetery.
