Emmett O'Neil's chief claim to fame is actually more infamous than famous. His father was a wealthy and respected merchant. He himself was a state legislator (1876) and banker.

But he parlayed the trust that he had cultivated into considerable swindles. The 1883 newspapers estimated his take at $250,000. He absconded by dark of night, but was apprehended, convicted, and sentenced to 10 years in the Clinton state prison. He was released after seven years, but died within two years of his release.

His widowed mother, his sisters, his wife, and his children were all among the victims of his crimes.
