Carl Emery Franks, 93, of 631 16th Ave. SW, Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, in his home following an extended illness.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Del Bear, with military rites. Inurnment: Linwood Cemetery Mausoleum, Cedar Rapids, at a later date. Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dolores; a sister, Thelma Loufek and husband Leonard of Port Charlotte, Fla.; and two nephews, Robert Loufek of Washington and Jim Loufek of South Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Carl was born Feb. 8, 1908, the son of Hayden and Lillie Bear Franks, in Cedar Rapids. A lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids, he served with the U.S. Navy Sea Bees during World War II. On Oct. 2, 1948, Carl was united in marriage to Dolores Mae Bunting in Nashua, Iowa. For 38 years, he was a monotype operator for Russell's Guides and a photographer for The Gazette for 21 years. Carl and his wife Dolores were Master Flower Show judges who participated in fairs and shows all over the state of Iowa for many years. He was a member of the Linn County Rose Society, Good Earth Garden Club, American Legion Post 5 and an emeritus member of the Board of Directors for the Indian Creek Nature Center.
