Arthur Ernest Huebner, of Braham, MN, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 6, 2014. He died suddenly at the Grass Lake Cemetery just after he completed watering the flowers on his parent’s graves. He was 91 years old.
Art was born on October 18, 1922 to Richard and Mildred (Hartman) Huebner in Bloomington, Minnesota. Art was one of nine children. He attended school in Bloomington and worked at a tree farm through the Depression.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army taking his oath of duty on January 28, 1941 with the 60th Coast Artillery Battalion, stationed at an island in the Philippines called Corregidor, where he took his basic training. On December 7th, 1941 the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Corregidor became headquarters for the allied forces, and on December 29, 1941 the Japanese began their attacks on the island that led to total destruction of Corregidor and the capture of many soldiers. Art was taken prisoner on May 6, 1942, endured horrific conditions leading to his destination in a labor camp in Manchuria, China. He was liberated by the Russians nearly 3 ½ years later. He was a POW/MIA. Art served in the military for 12 years before being honorable discharged in 1953. He was awarded many metals of honor including the Purple Heart.
After discharge from the Army he worked at International Harvester in Chicago. He attended Dunwoody for welding, and later moved back to Braham to the family farm with his parents, where he resided until his death.
On August 20, 1966 he was united in marriage to Beverly Ann Steiner, and to this union two children were born; Callie and Jeffrey. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing trips; an animal lover, taking the dogs for rides on his 4-wheeler. He loved hatching Canadian Honkers and watching them migrate back to his pond each year. He was a master gardener who loved to share his harvest with others. He was a football and baseball fan, and he was a builder.
Most of all he enjoyed his children and grandchildren; being involved in every aspect of their lives. He was a great conversationalist; he loved to visit. He served on the board of the Grasston Mill and enjoyed many hours of talk and coffee there. He was a man with a generous heart who touched the lives of many. He will be greatly missed.
Art is preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Richard “Bud” Huebner, Zona Huebner, Adria “Pinky” Anthony, Geraldine Fisher, Yvonne Pieper, and Shirley Fish; grandson Gannon Marohn; brothers-in-law, Marvin Dresler, Frank Steiner, and Mitchell Steiner.
He is survived by his wife Bev of Braham; daughter, Callie (Brian) Marohn of Braham; sons, Jeffrey Huebner of Braham; Grandchildren, Colton Marohn (Cassie), Bryce Marohn, Sarah Huebner, Kayla Huebner; brother, John Huebner of Stockton, MO; sister, Gloria Walsh of San Pedro, CA; brother-in-law, Gary (Karen) Steiner of Brook Park; sisters-in-law, Barbara Steiner, Wanda Dresler, and Sally Steiner all of Mora; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was held on Sunday, August 10 at Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home with Rev. Douglas Larson officiating. Music was provided by Elaine Keehr and Jon Ekstrom. Pallbearers were Art’s grandchildren. Interment was at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Arrangements were handled by Akkerman-Ingebrand Funeral Home of Mora.
