Rick enjoyed a 40 year career in radio, television, film and video production. He was a 1967 graduate of Enid High School in Enid, Oklahoma and the Midwestern Broadcasting School in Chicago in 1968. He joined the Army and proudly served in the Vietnam War.
He was a radio disc jockey in Wilmington, North Carolina, and then spent many years in the cable television industry, working for Channel 2 in Enid and Salina Cable TV Channel 6 in Salina, Kansas.
Rick opened Mid America Productions in 1984 in Salina which he owned and operated for more than 30 years. Rick was a member of both the Kansas and the National Associations of Broadcasters.
He leaves behind Judy (Gehrt), his best friend and wife of 22 years; daughters, Karrie Smythia and Kelly Bunker; step-mother, Kay Covert; sisters, Leslie Weldon and Robin Maguire; and his grandchildren Morgan Smythia, Riley Unruh, Madison Smythia and Reese Unruh; and many nieces and nephews.
