Ernest Eugene "Gene" Dunn, 80, of Republic, was reunited with his parents Lawrence and Susie (Morgan) Dunn, and siblings, Andrew Clayton, Herman A., Evelyn Dunn and Frances J. (Dunn) Sherman, Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at his home.
Ernest was born Jan. 13, 1934, in Whitesburg, Kentucky. After he graduated from high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1953, where he served in the South Pacific at Enewetak. In 1957, while stationed at Walter Reed Hospital, he met his future wife, Jacqueline Howard. They remained married until Mr. Dunn's death.
Ernest is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jacqueline (Howard) Dunn; three sons, Thomas E. (Renee) Dunn of Dayton and David M. (Robin) Dunn and Stephen C. (Donna) Dunn, both of Republic; and one daughter, Deborah Michelle Dunn of Lexington, Kentucky.
Mr. Dunn was a 1963 graduate of Tiffin University. He was a member of Wade Benfer American Legion Post No. 404, Republic, and was a disabled American veteran. He retired in 1991 from Allied Signal Autolite Division as the vice president of manufacturing. He was a lifelong Kentucky basketball and Cleveland Indians baseball fan. He loved family gatherings, building things, was a World War II buff and also enjoyed reading.
His funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at Lindsey-Olds Funeral Home, 3085 S. SR 19, Bloomville, with Pastor Matt Sherman officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Tiffin. Wade Benfer American Legion Post No. 404, Republic, will conduct military graveside services.
Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday and one hour before time of service Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice Care of Tiffin or to a charity of the donor's choice.
