Romanian Statesman. He served as the President of the Council of Ministers from March 6, 1945 to June 2, 1952. He also served as the President of the Presidium of the Great National Assembly from June 12, 1952 to January 7, 1958. He graduated from the Hungarian Reformed high school in Orastle in 1903. Later he studied at both the University of Budapest and University of Berlin, before earning his doctorate at the University of Leipzig in 1907. He went into law practice before serving in the Austro-Hungarian military during the First World War. After the war, he joined the political scene as a member of the Romanian National Party (RNP). From 1926 to 1927, he served as both Minister of State and Public Works in the Romanian government. In 1933, he founded a peasant-based political organization known as the Ploughmen's Front. His party would later join with the Communist Party to form a National Democratic Front in 1944. On March 6, 1945, the Soviets forced King Michael of Romania to appoint him as prime minister and he went on to serve in this position until stepping down in 1952. He became president on June 12, 1952 and served until his passing of complications following a stomach operation.
