Czechoslovak President. He served as President of Czechosolvakia from 1968 to 1975. During his early adulthood, he rose through the ranks of the Czechoslovak army. After Germany's takeover of Czechoslovakia during world War II, Svoboda went underground first to Poland and then to the Soviet Union. After Czechoslovakia was liberated in 1945, he was appointed Minister of Defense by President Eduard Benes. As a communist sympathizer, Svoboda did nothing to prevent the party's takeover of the country in 1948. In 1950 he was forced out of the army and the next year was imprisoned. He lived in obscurity after being released, but returned to public life after an inquiry by Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. In 1968 Svoboda became President of Czechosolvakia after the ouster of long time Communist leader Antonin Novotny. He played a major role in securing the release of Czech communist leader Alexander Dubcek and others after the Soviet invasion of Czechosolvakia later in the year. He retired in 1975 due to poor health.
