Horace "Butch" Spencer, Jr., departed this life on August 18, 2014, at Memorial Medical Center. Mr. Spencer was born in Springfield, Ill., on April 30, 1955, the eldest son of Horace and Dolores Brown Spencer, Sr.

Mr. Spencer accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age and attended Union Baptist Church. He later became a member of Pilgrim Rest M.B. Church.

Butch attended Springfield Public Schools, graduating from Springfield Southeast High School in 1972. He served in the Air National Guard from 1974- 1980. Mr. Spencer was employed by the American Red Cross for 17 years and was later employed by Simplex, Inc.

He married Bessie Austin on April 1, 1978. To this union was born four daughters, Lovie, Kiswai, Lakisha and Horazina. Butch enjoyed sports, fishing and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Spencer was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Bruce Allen and Gregory Wayne Spencer, and special aunt, Minnie Cunningham.

He leaves to cherish his life his son, Dante Shelton, Sr., of Springfield; daughters, Lovie (Reco, Sr.) Faine, Kiswai (Jamel, Sr.) Broomfield, Lakisha Spencer-Wash, Horazina (Justin, Sr.) McCoy, all of Springfield, and Ivy Walker of Los Angeles, Calif.; sister, Deborah (William) Williams; brother, Kevin Spencer; 14 grandchildren; former wife and lifelong friend, Bessie Wells; special sister-in-law, Mae Coleman; caregiver, Paula Harris; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church, 1800 South Martin Luther King, Jr., Drive, Springfield, IL 62703, with Bishop Herman Tolar officiating and Rev. Charles W. Tiner, Senior Pastor.

Walker Funeral Services in Springfield is in charge of arrangements.
