Gertrude was the daughter of William Franklin Poland and Sarah Weiker, born in Seneca County. Gertrude's mother died August 17, 1905 at the birth of her fourth child, Ralph Robert Poland. Her dad gave her up for adoption to Bert Apple and Daisy Preston. The three sons were put in foster homes. They all retained their birth name except Ralph Robert, who went by his foster family name until he was in his late teens.
