Alonzo Starr was born January 28, 1822 at Pavillion, Genesee county, N. Y., and he lived there until he was twenty-one years of age when he settled on a farm in Lake county, Ind. He was married October 14, 1852 to Ruby Wallace of Crown Point, Ind. A few years later he left the farm and took a position as clerk at Valparaiso, Ind., from which place he moved to Francesville, Ind., to engage in the mercantile business. While at Francesville he became a member of the Order of Free Masons. From Francesville he moved to Winamac in 1865 and was elected sheriff of the county. In this official capacity of the county he served two terms. At the expiration of his term of office he moved to the farm where he died March 20, 1898, at the age or 76 years, 1 month and 21 days. There were born to this union four sons and two daughters, the oldest son, Wallace Starr, died at the age of two. He leaves his wife, two daughters and three sons as well as sisters, brothers and other relative and friends to mourn his loss. The funeral was conducted from the residence under the auspices of Winamac Lodge No. 262, F. and A. M., Tuesday, March 22, 1898, at two o;clock. The funeral discourse was delivered by Rev. David Handley. Interment was made in the Winamac cemetery. Mr. Starr was without much question one of the best informed Masons when it came to the workings of that order in northern Indiana and was always faithful in his work and attendance as long as his health permitted.
