Police believe the boy tried to avoid the eastbound train from Springfield but stumbled. After being hit, he was dragged 38 feet before it came to a stop. Omer J Barriere Sr, widowed father of nine, said the boy suffered from multiple sclerosis and often “stumbled around” a great deal.
Besides his father he left behind six brothers and two sisters; and his grandmother, Mrs. Emma Barriere. He was a junior at Leicester High School, described as a friendly and hardworking student. A service was held at St. Aloysius Church, with Mass at a later date since he died on Holy Thursday and was buried on Holy Saturday.
