Ross Carlton Nelson, 76, of Des Moines, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on May 13, 2012. Ross was born in Cedar Falls to Alta and Carl Nelson. Ross was a graduate of Cedar Falls High School and attended Iowa State Teacher’s College at Cedar Falls. He served in the U.S. Army, was based in Alaska and was honorably discharged in 1956. It was in the service that Ross fell in love with Alaska and he eventually moved there in 1980 and retired there in 2003. During his retirement, Ross enjoyed camping in his motor home, fishing and admiring Mount McKinley.

Ross will be greatly missed by his family and is survived by his seven children, Natalie (Tim) McGee, Jon (Heidi) Nelson, Dana (Curtis) VanGilder, Tanya Nelson, Gabbi (Kevin) Steffensmeier, Emily (Stacy) Doonan and Marta (Michael) Clark; his brother, Dale (Shirley) Nelson; 14 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one niece; and four nephews.

A memorial celebration of life will be held at the Nelson Family Farm at 9105 W. First St., Cedar Falls, on Sunday, June 3, at 11 a.m.
