Valerie June (Holton) Phillips, 58, went home to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Valerie and her twin sister, Valene Mae, were born on April 11, 1953, in Midland, daughters of Iris June (Hildebrant) Holton and the late Francis Holton. Her infant sister, Valene, died shortly after birth.

Valerie graduated from Bullock Creek High School in 1971, where she met the love of her life and future husband, Carl Wayne Phillips. They were married on March 10, 1973. Valerie's greatest joy was being a devoted wife and mother to their three children. Valerie fulfilled another life-long desire when she returned to college and graduated from Saginaw Valley State University in 1991 with a bachelor's of science in nursing. She worked at Covenant Healthcare in Saginaw for 17 years in the Birth Center where she was a blessing to many expectant mothers, new mothers and their families.

Valerie is survived by her husband of 38 years, Carl Phillips of Bay City; son, Jared (Heidi) Phillips of Midland; daughters, Charity (Scott) Drake of Linwood, and Alison Phillips of Bay City; grandchildren, Kyle Phillips of Bay City, Elyse, Abigail, Katelyn and Andrew Phillips of Midland; mother, Iris June Holton of Midland; brothers, Gary (Suzanne) Holton of Fenville, Dennis (Barb) Holton of Corydon, Ind.; and sister, Susan Fradette of Midland. Valerie was preceded in death by her father, Francis Holton and infant sister, Valene.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Valerie's physicians, Dr. James Bodrie and Dr. Ernie Balcueva, her caregivers at Heartland Hospice, and her church family at Christian Celebration Center for their compassionate care, support, prayers, and love throughout her four year battle. Valerie's trust, peace and faith in Her Lord were a testimony to all her friends and family.

Funeral services for Valerie will take place at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012, at the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 W. Wheeler St. Pastor Mitzi Nimmo will officiate, with interment to follow at Midland Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Valerie's family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Monday, and again on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Covenant Foundation for The Birth Center or the Christian Celebration Center. www.waresmithwoolever.com
