Norman R. Montgomery, 90
Depot Museum host for years
Norman Richard Montgomery of Tenino passed away Aug. 7, 2014, at Providence St. Peter Hospital after a short illness, at the age of 90.
He was born to Ben and Ruth (Bullock) Montgomery on June 25, 1924 at Centralia.
Norman attended grade schools at Centralia and Bucoda and was a student at Colvin Grade School on Frost Prairie. He was graduated from Tenino High School in 1943.
Norman's first job after high school was at the historic Mutual Lumber Company of Bucoda, after he was turned down for the World War II draft.
After the Bucoda mill shut down in 1945, Norman worked for various mills in the area, including the Verl Ritter and Lloyd Johnson mills.
He loved farming and usually had a few cows around on the farms that he owned.
Norman was "tamed down" by Dorothy Jean Robertson, and they were married on Aug. 28, 1960.
Shortly after that Norman and Jean moved to Goble, OR. With his three stepdaughters, where Norman farmed and worked in the sawmills. While there, Norm's stepdaughters Pam, Pebble and Peggy were joined by a little sister, Norma.
After his retirement, Norm and Jean moved back to Tenino and became active in the Tenino eagles, Skookumchuck Grange and South Thurston County Historical Society. Norm's claim to fame was volunteering as host of the Tenino Deport Museum, showing and telling visitors of the area's rich history.
Norman's family invites everyone to join them Aug. 23 at the Skookumchuck Grange Hall for his Celebration of Life, starting at 10: a.m., and a graveside service at Forest Grove Cemetery at 12 noon. The Grange is located on Skookumchuck Road (5345 184th SE), south of Tenino.
