Obituary for Stefanie Tyler

Stefanie Lynn Tyler, 43, of Rome, NY went to Heaven Wednesday March 26, 2014 after fighting a 37 year battle with brain cancer and its after effects, the major one being pulmonary fibrosis. Stefanie was born in Rome, NY on July 3, 1970 and graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1988. She attended Southern Vermont College for 2 years and was then employed at Rome City and Murphy Memorial Hospital as a transporter until she was no longer able.
After many removals of her brain tumor, Stefanie was enrolled in an experimental chemotherapy program at SUNY Health Science Center in 1978. She is the very first PNET tumor survivor in the wide Northeast region and did a great deal to help pave the way for other children.
Stefanie was among the first group campers to attend Camp Good Days and Special Times in 1979 along with the founder’s daughter Teddi Mervis and 61 other campers. She attended annually for many years and this experience was a highlight in her young life.
Stefanie has been affiliated with the Resource Center of Independent Living for many years and the family wishes to thank their very caring staff, especially Kathleen Ingersoll. She also was a member of the Traumatic Brain Injury support group in Utica, NY.
Stefanie loved people and was blessed with an infectious sense of humor and the desire to give of herself however she could. Her contagious laugh and enthusiasm, especially in her younger years, will be remembered always.
Stefanie loved her church family at St. John’s Lutheran Church, and knew her Savior, Jesus, well. Because of this she was able to quickly decide to call it quits on more invasive measures to keep her alive. She had experienced the tracheotomy route for several months last year and did not want to do that again.
Stefanie knew her next stop would be Heaven where she would finally be healthy and happy.
Her family would like to express their deep gratitude to the outstanding staff at Rome Memorial Hospital, especially in ICU, 2 North, and the Emergency Department, and to Dr Potlurri, Dr. A. Wassel and Dr Brian Alessi. We are blessed to have access to quality of health care. Also our deep gratitude to the staff at The Rome Home at 417 N. Washington St., especially Mary Jo Kirk, for their loving care of our Stef.
Stefanie is survived by her special friend, Larry Stagliano of Rome, her mother and father, Dr. Herb and Sherry Skogland, her sister and brother in law, Jennifer and Paul Yanik of Rome, step-sisters and brothers-in-law, Suzanne and Douglas McKenney, of Hamburg, NY, Jennifer and Harry Dumesnil, of Louisville, KY, and a step-brother, Greg Skogland, of Philadelphia, PA, her God Son and nephew, Lucas Yanik and nieces, Colleen and Laurel Yanik of Rome, Matthew and Neil McKenney, Grace and Elizabeth Dumesnil, Heather Yanik Perry, several aunts and uncles and cousins, especially Jacquie and Charlie Miller of Barneveld, NY, and Jim Urtz of Syracuse, NY, and cousins John Wilbert and Jessica Wilbert, Mike and Mason. Stefanie was predeceased by her very close grandparents, Violet and James A. Urtz, of West Branch, NY, and her paternal grandparents, Fred and Vivian Tyler of Lee Center, NY.
Funeral Services will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 502 W. Chestnut St., on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at 11:00 AM where the Rev. Robert Catherwood, Jr., will officiate. Family and friends are invited and may call on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, or Camp Good Days and Special Times
