HERMON - Winfred Eugene "Gene" Bishop, Jr., age 63, passed away on Sunday, April 25, 2010 at his home under hospice care.

He was born September 16, 1946 in Canton, the son of Winfred "Babe" and Madge (Blake) Bishop. He graduated from Hermon-DeKalb Central School in 1964.

Gene married Deborah L. Fry on July 15, 1989 at Herring-Cole Chapel on the St. Lawrence University campus with Rev. Max Coots officiating.

More than anything, Gene enjoyed spending time with his family, teaching his grandchildren, tending to his vegetable and flower gardens, restoring Farmall tractors, and visits with friends and relatives.

Gene enlisted in the Army in 1968. He spent three years in Vietnam and Korea as an avionics technician and door gunner. After leaving Korea the first time, he was sent to Okinawa 1st Special Forces Group. From there he was transferred to Vietnam, 187th Assault Helicopter Company (AHC). He was awarded an honorable discharge in May 1971. Gene then reenlisted on July 29, 1971 and went to Korea for two years. He finished the last year at Fort Campbell, Kentucky with the 101st Airborne. While with the 101st Airborne, he spent six months at Frank Merrill Ranger School in Georgia as an instructor. He was awarded an honorable discharge in August 1974 with an E-5 rank. He was awarded numerous medals and citations while in the service which included; the Presidential Unit Citation, Presidential Meritorious Unit Citation, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/60 Device, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal-Korea, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service, National Defense Service Medal, Marksman Badge M-14, Expert Badge M-16, Good Conduct Medal, and the Cross for Conspicuous Service. Gene was a life member of the DAV (Disabled American Veterans), the American Legion, and the AMVETS.

From 1974 until 1985, he was Executive Secretary for Northern Hardwoods, Rochester, New York. Gene also worked twenty years for the Kodak Co. in Rochester, NY and NCC Systems in Potsdam. In September 1987, he was employed by St. Lawrence University as an Audio-Visual Technical Specialist until his retirement September 26, 2008 due to ill health.

He is survived by his loving wife Deborah, three daughters Kimberly A. Farrow and her husband Andrew of Hermon, Whitney D. Bishop of Hermon, and Monica Bishop of East Rochester; three granddaughters Cadence E. Farrow of Hermon, Hannah and Rosa Bishop of East Rochester, a brother Robert F. Bishop of Naples, NY; five nephews Robert and Ronnie Bishop, Dylan Flight, Joshua and Matthew Fry; one niece Crystal Flight; and several cousins. He is predeceased by his parents Winfred "Babe" and Madge (Blake) Bishop. A prior marriage to Kelly Bishop ended in divorce in 1984.

A memorial service with Military Honors was held on Wednesday, April 28 at 2:30 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Hermon with Rev. Shaun Whitehead, presiding and Tom and Nellie Coakley as speakers. A memorial veteran plaque was placed in the Hermon Cemetery. Friends called at the Green Funeral Home in Hermon on Tuesday, April 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. A luncheon followed the memorial service on Wednesday at the Hermon Fire Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Gene's name to the Bishop Book Fund at St. Lawrence University. An award from the Bishop Book Fund is given to students from the North Country their first year at St. Lawrence University to help defray the cost of their book expenses.
