Last Rites Held for Mrs. Mary E. Devine
Born in Iosco, Deceased was Daughter of Pioneer Residents
The death of Mrs. Mary Ellen Devine occurred at Memorial hospital in Waseca on Saturday afternoon at one o’clock. She had been in poor health for several weeks and during the three weeks preceding her death she had been confined to the hospital. The immediate cause of her death was a stroke of apoplexy. Born on June 13, 1861, Mary Ellen Murray was the daughter of Patrick and Sarah Murray who were pioneer residents of the township of Iosco, this county. At the time of her death, the deceased was seventy years of age. She was educated in the rural schools of Iosco township and grew to womanhood in that community. In 1889 she was joined in the bonds of wedlock with Daniel D. Devine who at one time was deputy county treasurer and later was engaged in the insurance and banking business. The marriage took place at Waseca where they made their home for a number of years. Later they moved Moines, Iowa, from which place they went to Albert Lea where Mr. Devine was engaged in the banking business up to the time of his death.
The deceased is survived by two daughters and one son as follows: Mrs. Marie Nystuen, St. Cloud; Mrs. Sadie White, Chicago and Joseph P. Devine of Minneapolis. She is also survived by one brother, Daniel D. Murray of Minneapolis. Her three children as well as her brother were in attendance at the funeral. The funeral services were held Tuesday morning at nine o’clock at the church of the Sacred Heart at Waseca with Rev. J.J. Treanor conducting the services. Interment took place in St. Jarleth’s Catholic Cemetery in Iosco where the parents of the deceased were also buried. Source: Janesville Argus 2/4/1932

Popular Waseca Woman Succumbs From the Effects of Stroke
Mrs. Daniel D. Devine, for many years a resident of this city and well and favorably known in this community, died at the Waseca hospital last Saturday afternoon. She suffered a stroke of apoplexy three weeks previously and the end was not unexpected. Her two daughters were here when she passed away. Mary Ellen Murray was born on a homestead in Iosco township on June 13, 1861. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Murray, were Waseca county pioneers. She grew to womanhood on the farm and married in Waseca in 1890 to Daniel D. Devine. They lived in this city until 1910 when Mr. Devine was appointed a deputy bank examiner, and they moved to St. Paul. Later on they moved to Albert Lea, which was her home until after her husband’s accident death in 1922 while deer hunting. Since then she had lived with her children most of the time. Surviving deceased are three children, Joseph P. Devine of Minneapolis; Mrs. Anton Nystuen of St. Cloud and Mrs. Walter White of Chicago. One brother, D.D. Murray of Fargo, N.D., also survives and was here during her last illness. The funeral was held from the Sacred Heart church at 9 a.m. Tuesday. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.J. Treanor, who also officiated at her marriage 41 years previously. The pall bearers were Abe Bird, John Bowers, Michael Broderick, J.P. Coughlin, John Kane and Phillip Keeley. Burial was in the family lot in St. Jarlath’s cemetery in Iosco. This cemetery and church property were donated to St. Jarlath’s parish by Mrs. Devine’s father, Patrick Murray.
