Carl served with the South Alberta Regiment. He was the commander of a tank when he entered Europe in 1944. In 1945, he was wounded and was recovering in England when the war ended. Carl returned home to marry Dorothy Field. They settled in Listowel where he found joy in his work as a carpenter. Carl continued to serve his community as a Councilor, Deputy Reeve and Reeve, building inspector for Elma and Wallace Township, the Town Superintendent, and later as the President of the Listowel Legion. He was the Mayor of Listowel during the Centennial Year in 1967. He was dedicated and active member of Calvary United Church in Listowel where he held every position but minister. But most importantly, he was a husband, father, and grandfather.
