Louis E. “Bob” Graham, 92, of Grand Island, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Evangelical Free Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Gary Schulte will officiate. Burial will be in Hastings at Parkview Cemetery with military honors provided by the U.S. Army and the Grand Island Veterans Honor Guard. All Faiths Funeral Home is serving the family.

Bob was born Feb. 1, 1922, in Sabetha, Kan., to Norman and Louise (Trees) Graham.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Virginia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce (Del) Tattershall of Blaine, Wash., and Karen Graham (Brian Harrington) of Plymouth, Minn.; three stepdaughters, Judi (Bernie) Raiter of Grand Island, Connie McClure of York and Deb Schrunk of Lincoln; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna.

Bob grew up with his grandparents, Edgar and May Graham and his aunts, Irma and Mildred Graham, since he lost his mother in childbirth. He attended grade school in the Broken Bow area, later moving to Sabetha, Kan., with his grandparents. He graduated from Sabetha High School in 1939.

He attended Kearney State College, obtaining an elementary teacher’s certificate. He taught rural elementary school for a year and attended Peru State College. During that year, 1941, World War II was declared. Bob enlisted in the Army Signal Corps and was sent to Radio and Code School in Colorado as a reservist. It was there that he met and married Anna B. Castle.

Bob was inducted into the U.S. Army on Sept. 6, 1943. He was sent overseas with the 965 Heavy Automotive Maintenance. He spent time in France and Germany, where his unit served in the Army of Occupation of Germany. Shortly thereafter, the 965th HAM unit was sent by ship through the Panama Canal to the Philippine Islands to prepare for the invasion of Japan. Just as they arrived, the “bomb” was dropped on Japan and the war was soon over. Bob was honorably discharged April of 1946. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 53.

Upon his return home, he used his GI Bill to attend Peru State College and earned his bachelor’s degree. He taught high school chemistry, physics, physical science and mathematics at West Point for 15 years, while obtaining his master’s degree at Colorado State College. He then moved to Hastings and taught the same subjects at Hastings High School for 23 years, retiring in 1986.

He and his wife, Anna Graham, were married for 46 years and had two daughters, Joyce and Karen. Mrs. Graham died in 1989. Later, he met a fellow retired teacher, Virginia Prickett. They married and she brought with her a large family of brothers, sisters, three daughters and their families. They graciously included him as a brother-in-law, step-parent, grandparent and great-grandparent.

A kind man, Bob, was concerned about everyone and interested in everything. He loved to travel and had been to every state in the Union and Canada. He will be remembered as the BEST father and step-father a girl could have, and the best grandfather ever.
