Services set for Stahl

Services for Mr. Don R. Stahl, 56, will be held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, January 19, at Rose-Neath Minden Chapel. Officiating will be Rev. Judy Bazer, pastor of Brushwood United Methodist Church, assisted by Father Govic Moraus, priest of St. Paul's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Brushwood Cemetery.

Visitation for friends began at 11 a.m. today at Rose-Neath's Minden Chapel.

Mr. Stahl died Sunday, January 16, at Minden Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Dubberly and a member of the Brushwood United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Centenary College.

A part-time deputy tax assessor, Mr. Stahl was also a retired teacher and outstanding basketball coach in the Webster Parish School System with many accomplishments including 100 victories in a row — a state record —from 1980-81 and a 58-0 season (a national record). He compiled an overall record of 824-435 as a boys' basketball coach at five different schools.

Although Mr. Stahl's career featured stops at Dubberly, Homer, St. Martinville and Heflin, he is best known for his years at Sibley where his teams won state titles in 1978 and 1979.

His career also includes more than 100 wins as a girls' basketball coach. In 1979 and 1980, he earned state Coach of the Year honors. He was an All-Star coach in 1979 and was the Wilson Region 5 Coach of the Year nominee in 1991.

Mr. Stahl was scheduled to be inducted into the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame January 26. In his years of coaching Don influenced the lives of many young people.

He is survived by his wife, Priscilla Stahl of Dubberly; three daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Clyde Heard of Dubberly, Janet and Tommy Thompson of Minden and Susan and Billy Reeves of Minden.

Other survivors include two brothers and sisters-in-law, Harry and Pat Stahl of Minden, Bill and Ginger Stahl of Dubberly; six grandchildren, Trey Smith, Will Reeves, Amanda Leger, Crystal Thompson, Steven and David Heard, several nieces and nephews; and a host of relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Lott, Matt Martin, Fred Evans, James Roach, Van Gardner, Jimmy Stewart, Donald Nation and Willie Jackson.

Honorary pallbearers will be Doug Duke, Clyde "Buster" Carlisle, Cleve Strong, Wayne Williamson, Buck Worley, Joe Butler, Butch Williams, Billy Montgomery, Kerry Burns and Jimmy Russell.

Memorials may be made to Brushwood United Methodist Church or the donor's choice.
