SIOUX CITY | William O. "Bill" Thayer, 69, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at his home.

Services will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Cathedral of the Epiphany, with the Rev. Patrick Behm officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home.

William "Bill" was born on Aug. 26, 1944, and resided in Sioux City most of his life. He graduated from Central High School in 1962. He attended Nettleton Business School and graduated from accounting in 1964. Mr. Thayer earned his bachelor degree from Briar Cliff University in 1968. His postgraduate work was done at several universities, including the University of South Dakota, North Texas University, Florida State University and Wayne State College.


Mr. Thayer began his teaching career in 1968 with the Minneapolis School system. He returned to Sioux City in 1969 and began his 45 years at Bishop Heelan Catholic High School, where he was chairman of the Business Education Department. He also taught adult education at Western Iowa Tech Community College from 1970 to 1986.

He was a past member of the Iowa Business Education Association, the National Business Education Association, and the National Catholic Education Association. In 1984, while attending a Gregg Education Conference in Florida, he was named Outstanding Business Educator.

Mr. Thayer is survived by one sister, Roberta Kay; one brother, Kenneth Thayer; three nieces; three nephews, and several grandnieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his father, William O.; his mother, Catherine E.; and two sisters, Nellie and Madalynn.
