A Celebration of Life in loving memory of R.C. Cohee will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at Jehovah Baptist Church in Milo. Military grave rites will follow in Cobb Cemetery, with the Rev. Theodore Anderson officiating and Pastor Gregory Newhouse delivering the eulogy.
With family at his bedside, R.C. departed this life at 7:04 a.m. Wednesday in the South Oklahoma Heart Health Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was born Feb. 9, 1935, in Springer, to the parentage of Perry Cohee and Mary McGee Cohee. He grew up in the Springer community and attended elementary school at Cobb. R.C. attended high school at Berwyn, and graduated from Central High School in 1954.
His work ethics included detailing cars at Claude Arnold Chevrolet. R.C was inducted into the Army, where he retired after 21 years. The First Class Sergeant’s tours of duty included Italy, three terms in Germany, Vietnam and, finally, Fort Sill in Lawton before being discharged, having served 21 years. A decorated soldier, his distributions include D Plus, ATZR-AGPF (1), ATZR-AGPA (1), CMFAEF (1), Cdr, HHB USAFACFS, Ft. Sill; ATZR-AGPD (45), ATZR-AGPHA (1), HQDA (DAPC-EPL-C), 200 Stovall St. Alexandria, Va. (1).
He and the former Vera Harris were married Oct. 4, 1964, in Ardmore. A son, Ronald Michael, was born to this union. An incident at Lake Murray’s Spillway claimed his life July 31, 1983.
R.C. began employment in the maintenance department at Michelin. After 20 years, he began his second retirement.
He accepted Christ as Lord and Savior and was baptized at Jehovah Baptist Church. He began his walk with the Lord late in life and never looked back. A devout Christian, he was ordained as deacon, a trustworthy and honorable treasurer, active in the Sunday School department, Bible study, and all other facets of the church. He took his duties very seriously.
R.C. loved to fish. His final, most recent, and highly memorable fishing trip was at Lake Neustadt. He, with his brother-in-law, Alvin Dorsey, returned home with a large fish tale to show and tell. He had caught a 35-pound catfish. Also a hunter, R.C. would sit in a deer stand for hours waiting for deer. Additionally, he kept physically fit by frequently exercising at the Chickasaw Wellness Center.
R.C. was also a dynamic chef. He loved to cook and therefore prepared delectable gourmet meals, including desserts.
Other than his son, R.C. is also preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Wendell DeSean Cohee.
He leaves to forever cherish precious memories, his devoted wife of 50 years, Vera; a son and daughter-in-law, Wendell and Charlotte Cohee, Ardmore; two daughters, Debra Douglas-Cohee, Ardmore, and Kim Cohee, Los Angeles; three sisters, Frances Roberts, Elizabeth “Monkey” Anderson, both of Ardmore, and Annetta Talley, Mt. Holly, N.J.; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law Fern and Alvin Dorsey, and Curtis Harris; three aunts, Anna Wilson, Lorece Wilson and Verda B. McGee, all of Ardmore; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, numerous other relatives and friends.
