Survivors include two brothers, Carl Gilbert, Smithville, Tenn., and James Helton, Conroe; two sisters, Mrs. Lila Jo (name missing) of Tennessee and Mrs. Ellen Katch(paper torn) of Monroe, Michigan.

From The Houston Chronicle September 1951

ONE CONROE BOY KILLED, ONE HURT IN AUTO COLLISION

The body of Howard Eugene Gilbert, 17, who was killed Sunday, September 16, in an automobile collision on Humble Road in Houston, was sent Monday afternoon to Smithville, Tenn., for burial following funeral services in the Metcalf Chapel. Rev D.E. Calhoun officiated.

William O. "Bobby" Lang, 18, son of Mrs. Lula Quarles of Conroe, is in Montgomery County Hospital, after being transferred from a Houston Hospital, semi-conscious and in critical condition suffering a possible skull fracture and internal injuries. Gene and Bobby worked at the Crighton and Liberty Theaters in Conroe and had worked until midnight. Gene had never been to Houston having lived in Conroe only about 3 months. He and Bobby decided to drive down and visit with Bobby's aunt, Mrs. M. H. Brown who lived on Zoe Street in the Denver-Harbor area. Finding no one home they headed back to Conroe and were hit head on by a DUI.

THE 1940 CANNON CO TN CENSUS

Jesse Gilbert ----- 51 born TN
Effie (wife) ----- 36 born TN
Jo (daughter) ----- 9 born GA
Ellen (daughter)--- 8 born TN
Howard E. (son) --- 5 born TN

F.A.G. lists Effie Jones Gilbert (#77359791) buried in Cannady Cemetery Smithville Dekalb Co TN as the wife of Jesse Gilbert. I believe this is Gene's mother.

The death certificate of Gene lists Effie Jones as his mother and Jesse Gilbert as his father --- it did not give the cemetery of his burial.

Bobby was my brother ~~ Gene was my friend whom I worked with at the Crighton Theater. I also attened his funeral. Gene was liked by all the theater employees and his favorite color was blue. That very day he had told our assistant manager that "I guess I will be wearing blue when I die". Sadly he was.

GOD BLESS YOU GENE~~~

The brother listed as James Helton died in Conroe in 1972 He was first buried in Conroe Memorial and later was moved to Garden Park Cemetery in Conroe. His name was shown as James Maloney Helton. James was the informant on the death certificate of Gene.
