PICACHO, Ariz. – One person is dead and several were injured due to a series of crashes on Interstate 10 near Picacho Peak after a massive dust storm rolled through the area Tuesday, cutting visability to near zero.

According to Bart Graves with the Department of Public Safety, 16 vehicles, both commercial and passenger, were involved in those crashes that occurred in the westbound lanes shortly after noon.

DPS said a 66-year-old man from Austin, Texas, was killed and his wife, who was driving, is in critical condition. They have been identified as William Joseph Tatsch and Paula Fry Tatsch, 65. Graves said their Honda sedan collided with a large freight truck. The car traveled under the rear of the truck after impact.

William Joseph (Bill) Tatsch, age 70, died of fatal injuries sustained in a multi-vehicle accident in Arizona on October 4, 2011. His wife of 43 years, Paula Tatsch, suffered injuries in the accident.

Bill was born on his father's birthday, September 18th, in 1941, in Fredericksburg, Texas. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Fredericksburg in 1960.

He served in the Texas Army National Guard from 1959 to 1964, achieving the rank of Corporal. He was retired from a very successful career as a salesman for Allied Beverage/Block Distributing Company in Austin, where he won sales awards and was the company's first million-dollar salesman. Bill's professional excellence was surpassed by his dedication to and love for his family.

His marriage to Paula exemplified mutual respect and love, a unified concern for and willingness to help others, and a pure enjoyment of simply being together. He was THE VERY BEST husband, father, and grandfather. He adored his wife, daughters, and grandchildren. Throughout his life, he proved his commitment to family, whether it was protecting his little sister from a snake on their walk home from elementary school or making dozens of trips with Paula to Colorado and Arizona to maintain and nourish their close bonds with their daughters and grandchildren.

Bill's contagious laugh filled any home blessed with his presence and brought joy to everyone there, even those who hadn't heard what he was laughing about. His love for the ponies at Manor Downs and Retama Park brought him both excitement and a few lucrative trifectas!

He will be sorely missed by his family and many special friends in the Austin area, the Texas Hill Country, and beyond.

Survivors include his wife Paula; twin daughters, Vanessa Tatsch of Colorado and Melissa Patno of Arizona; Melissa's husband, Thomas Patno, their two children Olivia and Jake, and their dog Drake.

He is also survived by four sisters, Cherie Kidd, Annette Whittington, and Marilyn Tatsch, all of Fredericksburg, and Charleen Petsch of San Antonio; sister-in-law and spouse, Dede and Frank Mease of Houston, and their son Josh; sister-in-law Cindy Fry of Seattle; and five nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Nellie Wallendorf Tatsch; his parents-in-law, Jake and Dottie Fry and June Overstreet; two brothers-in-law, Jack Whittington and Vernon Petsch; and one nephew, Keith Kidd.

Planning of memorial services for Bill is being postponed pending his wife's recovery. Our family will always be grateful to Paula for filling Bill's life with the happiness that he shared with all of us.
