US Congressman. He graduated from Emory and Henry College, became a farmer and was active in the real estate business. He joined the Confederate Army for the Civil War, served in several units, and rose to Colonel and commander of the Sixty-fourth Regiment. He returned to his farming and business interests after the war, and served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1879 to 1883. In 1889 he was the unsuccessful Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor. In 1902 Slemp was the successful Republican candidate for a seat in the US House of Representatives. He was reelected twice and served from 1903 until his death. Campbell Slemp was the father of Congressman Campbell Bascom Slemp (1870-1943).
