Mahonri Mackintosh Young was born August 9, 1877 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County Utah to Mahonri Moriancumer and Agnes Mackintosh Young. He was grandson to Brigham Young. He studied art under the Utah Artist James T. Harwood in 1897. He studied starting in 1899 with Kenyon Cox at the Art Students League in New York City. He studied for four years with Jean Paul Lauren at the Julian Academy in Paris, France. He attained international recognition for his work at the Salon in Paris. His works were exhibited in Paris, the United States, Rome and South America. He created "This is the Place Monument" at Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County Utah honoring the pioneers and explorers of Utah. He sculpted the statue of Brigham Young for the Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol Bulding. His sculpture was seen in 1939 at the American Pavillon at the Worlds Fair, New York. He died on Nov. 3, 1957 at Norwalk, Fairfield County, Connecticut at the age of 80. He was buried beside his wife and parents in Salt Lake City City Cemetery on Nov. 9, 1957. He was one of the most famous of Utah Realist Artists.
