Nolen (whose name is usually spelled Nolen instead of Nolan) was the son of a New Mexico policeman, Robert B. Butler & his wife, Osie Lee (Pollard) Butler who were both born in Mississippi and migrated to New Mexico during the great depression and who raised a large family there.
When Nolen was age 41 and living in Texas, his father was killed in the line of duty. The Butler family has a lone line of ancestors.
